County residents rejected added property taxes to support local libraries.

The measure failed with 55 percent of voters against the proposed mill levy, listed on the ballot as Referred Measure 1A.

The funds would have been used to maintain normal library operations. Libraries may now be forced to cut staff and hours.

“We’ll be going forward with some decreases in our library services, but although quantity will be less, we hope to keep the quality our users expect,” said Mary Anne Wilcox, executive director for the library district.

The library district board had already approved two budgets, one in case the measure passed and one in case the budget had no change. According to Wilcox, the library district now faces a $700,000 loss in revenue.

“We’re hitting the ground running, and we have lots of work to do,” Wilcox said. “I want to thank all the individuals who worked very hard and spent long hours devoted to passing this ballot question. They make me very proud to be a part of the district.”

The library district board will discuss the new budget, take public comment and possibly make modifications at their next meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19. To view the library’s 2014 budget, visit the Grand County Library District website.
