Local "Chilihead" & Maverick’s Grille Owner Joins International Chili Society’s Winner Circle
GRANBY -The smell of hot chili peppers, simmering sauce and mouthwatering meat filled the mountain air during the International Chili Society’s (ICS) Rocky Mountain Regional Chili Cookoff Saturday Aug. 21, 2010, and the Colorado State Chili Cookoff Sunday Aug. 22, 2010, in Winter Park. Sean Richardson, local ICS “chilihead” and owner of Maverick’s Grille in Granby contributed to the aroma with his award winning red and green chili. Richardson’s green chili placed second in the ICS Chili Verde category during the Rocky Mountain Regional Chili Cookoff while his red recipe honored third in the ICS Traditional Red grouping. During the Colorado State Chili Cookoff Richardson’s green chili was awarded third place in the ICS Chili Verde division. The ICS organizes chili cookoffs around the world to raise money for charities and non-profit organizations. “Chiliheads,” as the organization calls its members, participate in these events to bring a little heat to the hungry and help to those in need. Money raised from the two events benefited the National Sport Center for the Disabled. “It is always fun to get outside and cook chili with friends,” Richardson said. “It is even more rewarding when it benefits a wonderful organization like the National Sports Center for the Disabled. Its humbling to be recognized for a food I love to cook.” Richardson features a version of his award winning green chili recipe on the menu at Maverick’s Grille and occasionally offers the red chili as a daily special. Maverick’s Grille specializes in Colorado family dining and is located at 15 East Agate Avenue (US Highway 40). Among Richardson’s recent accolades, he placed third in the People’s Choice category during the 2009 Breckenridge Chilly Chili Cookoff and topped the leader board at number one during the 2009 ICS Mountain Regional Chili Cookoff in Winter Park with for his guacamole. The restaurateur hopes to attend the next ICS cookoff in Superior on Sept. 11, 2010.
