The volunteer group Taking Steps for Cancer recently announced how it supported community members struggling with cancer in 2024.

Taking Steps assisted 53 Grand County residents with costs related to cancer treatment and screening, according to a news release. Over $170,000 in funds were provided for expenses such as gas, lodging, meals, screenings and other costs not covered by insurance, according to a report from Judy Eberly, Takings Steps committee chair.

Taking Steps raises funds through annual events such as the Spirit Polar Plunge, Sagebrush Western Classic Golf Tournament and Taking Steps 5K Walk/Run & Auction.

“This is a completely grassroots effort,” Eberly stated in the release. “We are so grateful to the generous individuals and businesses who step up and donate and volunteer every year to make this important program possible.”

The nonprofit Mountain Family Center operates the Taking Steps Fund. Each year, Taking Steps for Cancer raises donations to support residents with their out-of-pocket expenses. Each client can receive up to $5,000 per year in reimbursement, regardless of income or insurance status.

On Sept. 24, 2023, community members participated in a 5K run/walk in Grand Lake, benefitting the Taking Steps for Cancer group.
