Longer Aspen runway would boost visits

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – A study for Pitkin County says adding 1,000 feet onto the Aspen airport runway would bring about 11,000 extra visitors and at least $29 million to the area annually.

The airport’s high-elevation runway isn’t long enough for commercial jets to take off with full passenger loads on warmer days when the air density is lower.

A consultant’s draft environmental assessment of a proposal to extend the runway to 8,000 feet says the longer runway would allow more jets to take off with full or nearly full loads.

The study projects the additional visitors would boost traffic on Aspen-area roads by about 10 additional vehicles per hour.

A public hearing on the study is scheduled Wednesday.
