MINTURN – A Vail Mountain Rescue crew quickly found a man and his son Monday night after they got lost while skiing the Minturn Mile.

The man and his son, who is about 9, reached the Minturn Mile, from Vail Mountain, said Sgt. Bob Silva of the Eagle County’s Sheriff’s Office.

‘The Mile’ as it is known locally is a a popular backcountry spot just outside the ski area boundary.

“Sounds like everybody was in good shape,” Silva said.

The man and his son were skiing out of the backcountry with a rescue crew Monday night and neither the man nor his son were injured, Silva said.

“Sounds like they got some bad directions,” Silva said. “They zigged when they should have zagged.”

The lost skiers, whose hometown wasn’t available, called 911 around 6 p.m. and rescuers were able to triangulate their location. They were lost within a mile of a trailhead and were found by 9:30 p.m., Silva said.

The rescue was made more urgent because the man and his son were not equipped to spend the night outdoors, Silva said.

But the man had a cell phone with a fully charged battery that allowed rescuers to not only pinpoint his location but stay in contact while they searched, Silva said.

The man and his son also heeded rescuers’ advice to stay where they were, Silva said.

“They stayed where they were so the searchers didn’t have to go looking somewhere else,” he said.
