GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – A man was found dead west of Carbondale, just off Highway 82, Wednesday afternoon.

Garfield County Sheriff’s investigators responded to the area near the intersection of County Road 100 and Lion’s Ridge Road, west of Highway 82, about 2 p.m. Wednesday, after someone called in a report of a body found just off the road.

Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis reported that deputies found an unidentified dead male with a gunshot wound. Information on the location of the bullet wound or the identity and age of the victim were not released Thursday pending an autopsy.

The Garfield County Coroner’s Office said that an autopsy was performed Thursday, and that it would be a few days before the report was complete.

McGinnis wouldn’t say if investigators suspected that this incident was actually a homicide or could be a possible suicide, but she said that an investigation is ongoing.

“Any time there is an unattended death, it’s investigated like a homicide until there is reason to believe that it is not a homicide,” McGinnis said. “Initial investigating officers did not see anything that seems suspicious.”
