Max Mote: It’s a tough time to increase tax revenues
October 27, 2009
To the Editor:
East Grand Voters are being asked to vote on a ballot issue that would give $300,000 each year to the schools. That proposal raises two questions:
1. How could any sane person now ask for higher local taxes, when state and federal taxes are scheduled to go through the roof? These are hard times, and they’ll get harder.
2. Can the schools think of other ways to meet their needs? Like, tighten the belt, skim off the cream. Everyone’s doing that.
Maybe it’s time to rethink our public school system. About 150 years ago, states established public schools through land taxation, to the country’s great benefit, but are schools still doing the job they were meant to do?
When a family’s house is burning, do you go wheedle them for money?
