Meadow Creek open for holiday traffic, but closures to come

For the July Fourth weekend, foresters are working to accommodate holiday vacationers at Meadow Creek Road.

Meadow Creek is popular for camping, hiking, fishing and cycling, but it’s also threatened by falling trees killed by the mountain pine beetle. The U.S. Forest Service Sulphur Ranger District, which manages Meadow Creek and other popular recreation areas within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, is aggressively working to create safer trails and campground by removing hazardous trees.

As pines are felled, skidded, processed and transported to mills, traffic along Meadow Creek Road has been delayed up to 30 minutes.

But over the holiday weekend, work will be suspended on July 3, beginning at noon. The area will remain open to camping and recreation until 6 p.m. on July 7.

On Monday, July 8, Meadow Creek Road will close to all traffic and recreational use while workers complete remaining hazardous tree removal.

“Hopefully most of the holiday campers will be gone by then anyway,” said Reid Armstrong, public affairs specialist for the Sulphur Ranger District.

The district does not have an estimated date for reopening at this time.
