Grand Junction Free Press staff

A teenager has died from complications related to H1N1 flu, the Mesa County Health Department said Thursday.

The teen was the first confirmed pediatric death related to H1N1, or swine flu, in the region.

The unidentified teen also suffered from “server underlying medical conditions,” the department said in a statement.

The department declined to release additional detail citing the family’s privacy. The department also extended its “sympathy to the family.”

The department said flu activity in the county appears to have peaked during the last week of October when 20 cases were hospitalized within that period. Last week, two cases were hospitalized.

As of Thursday there were 96 hospitalized cases of influenza in the county.
