Middle Park High School community has a hole in its heart

To the Editor:

The Middle Park High School community lost a valued member Wednesday in an unfortunate automobile accident.

For those of you without young people at the high school, it may have been just another day. The young Miss Amy Gallagher, an English teacher fresh to Grand County, was a teacher who had not become part of the system just drawing a wage but one who believed she could change the norm. I only had the opportunity to meet with her at back to school night and parent teacher conference night.

Amy had a wonderful outlook and was quick to see and understand what her students needs were. My daughter never liked English until her freshman year in Miss Gallagher’s ninth grade class. My daughter still will not say English is in her top five, but Amy was making a difference in its acceptability.

English, while very important in our culture, speaking from my own experience watching grass grow had it beat. Teachers that can make an otherwise boring subject come to life are special and don’t come along every day. The Middle Park High School community has a hole in its heart that will take time to heal.

I would just like to take a moment to thank Amy’s family for sharing their daughter with our community as she will be dearly missed.
