Middle Park High School Homecoming Week

Jessica Smith

Following on the heels of Back to School comes the Middle Park High School Homecoming Week. From Monday, Sept. 10, to Friday, Sept. 14, fun activities and school spirit abound, with the theme of “Throughout the Ages.”

“I think Homecoming’s always an exiting time,” said Nancy Karas, superintendent of East Grand School District. “It’s fun to see the school spirit, the community coming out for the home games, and see the alumni return for different events.

“I’m also a Middle Park High School graduate, so I enjoy it twice as much.”

It will also be the first Panther Homecoming event for new MPHS Principal Scott Eldred.

“Homecoming has been a tradition in high schools throughout the country for forever,” Eldred said. “One of the things that I’m learning is unique about Middle Park’s Homecoming celebrations is their bonfire. It’s a big community draw … bringing people together at the school for a community event.”

One of the new events this year is a scavenger hunt, in which students are given a list of fun activities or items or collect throughout the community; for example, a picture of a student shaking hands with a policeman, or helping someone across the street. The winners will present their “collection” during half-time of the football game on Friday.

“I’m just really looking forward to not only the football game … but just getting into that whole spirit of being a school that’s supporting all activities,” said Eldred. “Getting the students fired up about school spirit, getting them to participate, … whatever it is we need to create to corral school spirit, that’s our goal.”
