Mike Pfeffer: Big oil leaves us high and dry
February 28, 2012
To the Editor:
Why are Americans paying more for gas when the oil companies are exporting more than importing?
It seems to me that if you export 848 million barrels of oil in 2011 and import 750 million barrels of oil, then why are Americans paying more for gas? Sounds like we are sending out some of “OUR” oil for more profit and let the Americans pay for it?
In 2008 the oil companies had the biggest profit ever. How can this be while there was a gas shortage? Gas got over $4 a gallon. If somebody can explain to me how do you have a biggest profit year with less, I might take a $4 an hour cut in pay to make more.
On the other hand I have been thinking. All I hear is our elected officials wanting to “CUT” about everything from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc, etc. Do I ever hear them taking a “PAY” cut? I DON’T THINK SO. So the middle class and poor are expendable? While the rich pay less (the UPPER 1 percent), we pay 20-30 percent on taxes because there are MORE of us? The trickle-down effect doesn’t work. The rich keep their money and expect us to pay their fair share.
Don’t play into their hands thinking they’re thinking about YOU. They pocket the money, run to the bank and leave YOU HIGH and DRY.
