Missing Golden climber’s body found on Washington’s Mount Baker

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) – Searchers have found the body of a missing Colorado climber on Mount Baker.

The Whatcom County sheriff’s office says 34-year-old Sheryl Costello, of Golden, Colo., had reached the summit of the 10,781-foot mountain on Saturday with her boyfriend. They were on their way down when he lost sight of her near Heliotrope Ridge.

Bellingham and Skagit mountain rescue teams spotted the body Sunday in a hole that develops in the snow just west of the ridge.

Deputy Mark Jilk says they were unable to reach the body because of extreme snow conditions.

The Bellingham Herald reports the conditions will have to improve before the body can be removed from the mountain in northwest Washington.
