Finding quality local childcare can be difficult in Grand County. There are relatively few facilities to service the needs of the county; and as with all childcare facilities the number of available slots is limited.

Starting at the end of August, residents of Grand Lake and the Three Lakes Region will have a new nearby childcare facility to provide for their needs. Mountain Adventure Childcare, owned and operated by Abbie Wilkes, will open for business on Aug. 31.

Wilkes first moved to Grand County four years ago. She has worked at day-cares in the area and for the Fraser Creative Learning Center. Wilkes and her husband Johnny recently had a baby, and that life-changing event prompted her to open Mountain Adventure Childcare in her home, seeing it as an opportunity to provide daily care for her daughter while still working.

Mountain Adventure Childcare focuses on providing care for children ranging from infants through preschool. Abbie also plans to set up an after-school daycare program where she can accommodate children through high school age.

On a typical day at Mountain Adventure Childcare the youngsters will have breakfast served to them shortly after arriving. Afterwards Abbie will lead the kids in circle time, singing songs and conducting simple learning lessons. Throughout the day the kiddos will also enjoy at least three outdoor play activities, ranging from walks around the neighborhood to playing in the playground area set up for Mountain Adventure Childcare. Abbie will also serve lunch to her young wards along with an afternoon snack.

Mountain Adventure Childcare will also offer developmental programs in various subjects such as mathematics, communication, social/emotional and other cognitive language exercises.

“My philosophy of childcare is that children learn best through free creativity and exploration, so they can have fun while learning. It really opens their mind to the world around them,” Wilkes said. “We also have structured lessons during the day, so they get the free flowing creative experiences within a structured environment.”

Originally from Indiana, Abbie is fully licensed and certified and has been inspected and approved for her home childcare operation.

Mountain Adventure Childcare will be open Monday through Friday from 7:15 a.m. through 5:20 p.m. Mountain Adventure can provide childcare for up to five children and one infant. Several slots are still available. Mountain Adventure Childcare is located at 631 County Road 462 near the Green Ridge Campground area.
