Mr. Benson needs to wake up and smell the progressive movement
This letter is in response to Norm Benson’s letter dated Oct. 8: “Free Americans will never support Barack Obama”. I would like to argue the point that he is correct. Barack Obama will be your next president. And not because the country feels he’s the next best thing since J.F .K. but because the country feels lied to and perhaps not as free as they should be.
The “left” shouts loud and clear with disdain for the suspension of Habeas Corpus and the right to use “enhanced interrogation techniques” while the “right” buries their collective heads in the sand, or even worse, they vote “yes” on these bills, including Sen. McCain. After eight years of utter incompetence and an eagerness to overstretch executive power the American people are awakening and they are turning “left” .And not because they love Obama. But for the simple fact that they believe McCain is another Bush. I’m sorry but neither one of these candidate-have a “great vision” for America, just a desperate desire to become president. Mr. Benson said he wanted to give undecided voters a few things to think about. I will give you one. And this is why Obama will be your next President. Webster’s Dictionary for “liberal” and “conservative”.
Let me preface by saying I in no way believe the Democratic Party is liberal, far from it. But when your system is broken and there are only two parties that dominate the political scene it is easy for “labels” to stick. Especially when one side repeats over and over that you are liberal while they tout themselves as conservative. liberal; I. favoring progress or reform. 2.free from prejudice. 3.characterized by generosity. 4.not strict or literal. Wow those things sound great! Now let’s take a look at conservative. conservative; I. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc. and to limit change. 2.cautiously moderate. 3.traditional in style or manner. We are now in the 21st century, long past the days of the traditional in style “nuclear family” or should I say “nucular” and if you were to pose the question to a young person,”Knowing the definitions of conservative and liberal what would you consider yourself?” Now let me give you the numbers of new registered voters to answer that question. 29 states allow registering with affiliation to a party. 26 of them posted their numbers reflected from Jan. 1 2008 to Sept. 4. Republicans gained 223,000 new registered voters while the Democrats gained 1,400,000. That’s 6 to 1! In Colorado alone the numbers were 5 to 1 favoring Dems.
Thank you Republicans for labeling the Dems as liberal. For more than 40 years you tried to label them as such and for the most part they ran away from that “attack” themselves. But congratulations, you made it stick and now you are paying the price. And now the Americans who really only have two choices are leaning to those supposed “free thinking” liberals rather the “old man in his bathrobe telling you to get off his lawn.”
Mr. Benson needs to wake up and smell the progressive movement. Spouting Carl Rove/Fox News talking points only works with “the base” and makes you look as foolish to the public as McCain and Palin do. Speaking of Palin, ever heard of “Jumping the Shark”?
