New Grand Lake Bike Co. offers summer fun on wheels
Grand Lake’s summer tourism season is right around the corner and a group of three local men just started a new business on Grand Avenue in hopes of offering high country visitors a quintessential bit of summer fun.
Grand Lake Bike Company, the brainchild of Zach Boor, Scotty Hicks and JT Piribeck, is a new business venture offering bicycle rentals right in the heart of downtown Grand Lake. The shop offers cruiser bicycle rentals for folks staying and playing in the quaint mountain town right on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. Grand Lake Bike Company just opened for business on Friday and will be providing bicycle rentals throughout the summer and well into the fall.
The idea for the shop came from Boor, a teacher at Middle Park High School who previously spent his summers working in Grand Lake for Mountain Paddlers Kayak Shak.
“I was sitting on the beach watching all the cars drive into Grand Lake and then drive out because there was no parking,” Boor said. “Someone pulled up on a cruiser and I thought, yea, we should do that.”
Boor pitched the business idea to Piribeck, who also owns Rocky Mountain SUP in Grand Lake.
“Zach approached me last summer and I was like, game on,” Piribeck said. “If you come here in July there is no parking seven days a week. We hope to alleviate some of that.”
Hicks, who also teaches for East Grand School District, was also brought into the business planning mix, in no small part because of his extensive knowledge about bicycles.
“Scotty is legitimately obsessed with biking,” Boor said.
As a team each man has his own part to play.
“JT has more of the business sense. Scotty has more of the biking expertise. I am the warm body,” Boor joked, noting he would be spending the summer working at the shop.
Over the last 10 months the three men have been working to prepare for the summer season. They have purchased over 40 cruiser bikes for their rental business including several children’s bikes and two tandem bicycles. The bikes are the made in the classic cruiser style of the kind often founds on the highways and sidewalks of resort communities in places like Hawaii or Costa Rica. They come equipped with large comfortable seats, cup holders and bells. Most also sport front baskets to help patrons carry goods along for the ride.
“They just fit the Grand Lake summer scene,” Piribeck said.
“They are kind of a fashion statement,” Boor said, echoing Piribeck’s sentiment. “They look cool and fit exactly what you need them for.”
Grand Lake Bike Company will offers rentals at their shop but will also be willing to deliver bikes to the Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain area including points further northwest like Columbine Lake.
Along with bicycle rentals Grand Lake Bike Company will also offer minor bicycle repair and maintenance services and will be selling accessories such as water bottles, hats, basic bike parts and maps. The three men also have plans to upgrade the space in front of the storefront, located at 900 Grand Avenue in the space previously occupied by Rocky Mountain Outfitters, into a fun hangout spot for visitors to the area.
“There is more of a community aspect we can provide,” Piribeck said. “We built a table, added giant Jenga and cornhole. We just want to be a place folks can hangout, grab coffee next door and meet. It is a business but it is also a spot for people to come.”
