NPR will only come to Grand County if cost of license is raised

If we fund it, KUNC will buy a license to broadcast in parts of Grand County again.

This will only happen with our contributions.

This is a good opportunity-an existing license located in the Granby area, in the right band, with no interference; KUNC won’t have to gamble with application to the FCC, requiring lots of work, more money, potentially yielding absolutely nothing.

Last month, supporters learned a commuter through Grand County has already donated $10,000; 23.3 percent of the $42,900 license. Grand County listeners need only foot 77.7 percent of the bill. If all of the 168 people who have contributed to KUNC in the past donate, the cost would only be $196 per person.

Some among us can pay more, some less-what’s important is that we do it, and soon. If we don’t act, the license could sell to someone else: if we want to listen in 2008, we must act to install before the snow flies. KUNC needs to have your contribution by June 15.

Please don’t depend on others. As of April 21, Grand County listeners have contributed $4,556.50 ” 11 percent of what’s needed. Contributions are trickling, no-dribbling in. KUNC will maintain these funds separately, and return them if the deal isn’t sealed, so it’s as risk-free as investing gets.

KUNC’s programming includes NPR’s All Things Considered, BBC World Service, Morning Edition, Marketplace, Car Talk, A Prairie Home Companion, as well as a very good variety of music. Neither satellite radio nor internet streaming can satisfy all of these appetites, and do so with the flexibility, quality, and price of radio.

Your support might provide a youth the opportunity to learn about the rest of the world, science, or culture that otherwise might not come around.

The license is in or near Granby, and the two towers being considered are Sol Vista and North Cottonwood Pass. Please contact mailbag@KUNC.org if you are curious whether your area will get coverage.

If you own a business and play KUNC at work, please consider donating. If you listen, or would like others to have the opportunity, please donate.
