Obama’s record shows he doesn’t support Second Amendment
To the Editor:
It’s amazing how biased the national and local media are for their presidential choice this year, more so than any other year. I always thought newspapers were supposed to report the news fairly with just the facts. CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, the New York Times, Newsweek, and yes, Fox News are so biased it’s unbelievable what has happened to journalism. Opinions are opinions but at least get the facts rights.
In his Opinion column for the Sky-Hi Daily News, Mr. Munro states the NRA has an ad that claims Barack Obama voted four times against Americans’ right to self defense with a firearm. He then quotes Newsweek as stating, “Obama voted for (italics mine) a state law saying that local governments have the right to enforce their gun laws even when defendants can prove they acted in self-defense.” Newsweek? Wow.
When quoting Newsweek you might as well quote the New York Times and the Obama Web site. They’re all the same.
Newsweek and Mr. Munro notwithstanding, I looked up the facts. It took me all of five minutes. It seems you cannot own a gun in the town of Wilmette, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. A man shot a burglar who probably broke into his home two nights in a row. Under the local law, the town prosecuted the home owner even though the Cook County district attorney did not. He was fined $750, the maximum penalty. These are the facts of this case that both sides would agree on. The rest of this story is disputed.
The vote Mr. Munro quotes Newsweek on is from the Illinois General Assembly bill S.B. 2165. What the Illinois Congress wanted to do was to protect homeowners who were defending themselves. It was NOT a bill to uphold local government’s right to enforce local bans. It said local gun bans could not be enforced in cases where the home owner was defending himself. There is a big difference.
Obama did not vote FOR something, he voted AGAINST something. Notice the spin from the media? They make it sound good but it’s not accurate and Mr. Munro bought it hook, line, and sinker.
The record shows Obama voted AGAINST the bill twice, once on 3/25/04 and again on 5/25/04 after the Senate agreed to a House version. A vast majority of both Senate Democrats and Republicans voted for this bill 41-16 with Obama one of the 16. The Democratic governor then vetoed this bill and that veto was then was overridden overwhelmingly by both parties of the State Congress making it lawful for a homeowner to defend himself.
The facts show it was a bill to protect homeowners and that Obama voted against it twice even though a majority of his own party in the Senate and House voted for it. Obama also supported the gun ban in Washington D.C. although there was no official U.S. Senate vote on it.
This past June the U.S. Supreme Court did indeed strike down D.C.’s gun ban law saying it was incompatible with the Second Amendment. If Senator Obama supports the Second Amendment, why does he support laws prohibiting homeowners protecting themselves ” voting twice against S.B. 2165 and by supporting other bans? The number of times the NRA says Obama voted may be incorrect (there may have been other bills not referred to) but they are correct when it says he voted against Americans’ right to defend themselves.
