Obit: Chester (Chet) Joseph Valance
October 29, 2010
A celebration of life was held for Chester (Chet) Joseph Valance at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct.29, at the Allington Inn & Suites in Kremmling, Colorado. Chet died Oct. 24, 2010. Born in New York City, N.Y. in Jan. 11, 1943, Chet spent his childhood in Nanticoke, Penn. where he played football and was nicknamed “Moose.” Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp. where he served in the Bay of Pigs and was the youngest person to serve with embassy security in Paris, France. He met his future wife Jackie in France and soon after was discharged and returned to the United States. Jackie followed and they were married in February 1965. Chet and Jackie had three children, Jackie, Shelly and Craig. Chet started his civilian career on Wall Street where he worked with computers but longed for the open spaces of the West. He and his family moved to Colorado in the early 70s and settled in Longmont for several years. The mountains and rivers of Colorado were really Chet’s dream so in 1980 the Valances moved to Grand County and settled in Kremmling. Chet spent several years in Kremmling while building his beautiful home on the Williams Fork where he was able to spend his final days. He worked as a carpenter and was a building inspector until he started his own business. Chet’s passions included spending time with his family and friends, attending his grandchildren’s many sporting events and activities, rafting, hunting and fishing. He rafted the Grand Canyon three times and spent as much time as he could on as many rivers as he could. Chet trained a new generation of rafters through his willingness to let novices take over the oars and by instructing them on the ways of whitewater. Chet is survived by daughters Jackie Pesch (Leo) of Kremmling and Shelly Neibauer (Kurt) of Winter Park and son Craig Valance of Palisade; girlfriend Roz Kamback; sister Gloria McCormack (Ed) of Firestone, brother Ron Valance (Kathy) of Douglas, Wyo; grandchildren David Valance (McKenzie); and Taylor, Leo, and Rheann Pesch; and many other nieces, nephews and friends and relatives. Chet is predeceased by his father Chester Sr., mother Martha and brother Thomas.
