Albert F. Clark, Jr., 83, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was born in the Los Angeles area on Sept. 22, 1929, to Albert and Ruth Clark. He passed away on June 3, 2013, in Evansville, Ind., after a short illness while visiting family.

Al was a mechanical engineer with a long and varied career working for General Electric, Martin Marietta and Argonne National Laboratories. He had a great love of learning and a lifelong curiosity for how the world works that he passed on to his children, grandchildren and others.

Never content to rest easy, after his retirement he earned a teaching certificate. For years, he was a substitute teacher and tutor for young people in a number of technical subjects.

Upon retirement, he and wife, Betty, moved to Granby, Colo., in their beloved Rocky Mountains, where they lived for 25 years before returning to Idaho Falls to be near their daughter.

While there, in addition to teaching, he ran Clark’s Saw Sharpening Service and was a regular at the area hardware stores.

In addition to spending time with his family, Al had many interests, mostly in serving others.

He was an active member of the University of Colorado hiking club, where he met his cherished wife more than 60 years ago. Together, they organized many reunions for their long-time hiking buddies. As a Boy Scout Master, he always was organizing 50-mile hikes and spent time refurbishing rawhide snowshoes for all to use.

He was seriously dedicated to Barbershop singing and had a strong bass voice. He was a member of the Fallsmen in Idaho Falls and founded the Grand Chorale in Granby. He loved attending International SPEBQSA competitions.

His home was the Episcopal Church, and he spearheaded many building and improvement projects in the Idaho Falls and Granby churches.

He was a wonderful builder and carpenter, building two beautiful homes and a wonderful vacation cabin in Palisades, Idaho, that his family and friends will continue to enjoy for many years to come.

Al is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, with whom he enjoyed 61 years of wedded bliss, and his five children: Dave (Faith) Clark of Haubstadt, Ind.; Cathy Clark of Jacksonville, Fla.; Leslie (Joe) Alexander of Idaho Falls; Dan (Nancy) Clark of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Brian (Meg) Clark of Pullman, Wash. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. His sister, Nancy Clark, lives in the Albany, Ore. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law John Golden.

He will be sorely missed for his love and concern for his family, imparting countless life lessons and values to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including his work ethic and his love for the outdoors.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 7 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Granby where his ashes will be interned.
