Obituary: Joseph “Joe” Murray

Joseph “Joe” Stanley Murray passed away Oct. 12, 2014. He was born Oct. 14, 1942, in Edgewater. He was preceded in death by many loved ones including his parents, Douglas and Josephine Murray, and his wife Lee Ann Murray.

Joe began visiting Grand County in 1946 when Berthoud Pass was still a dirt road and before the dam to create Lake Granby had been built. In that time he proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era. In 1968 he relocated his family to Grand County permanently.

Originally living in the Winter Park area, he started several successful businesses including a popular bar and arcade in Fraser and later the Norton Marina in Grand Lake. Eventually the family made their way to Grand Lake and built several homes on well-known Murray Hill overlooking Lake Granby. Joe loved his house on the hill and enjoyed sharing his many passions including hunting, boating, snowmobiling and gun collecting with his three children Derek, Dirk (Leanne) and Shelly ,as well as many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Joe was known for his excellence in boat mechanics, his willingness to help any in need and his honesty in all situations. He will be greatly missed.

Services will be announced at a later date and held on Murray Hill. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to: Granby American Legion Post 88, c/o Duane Dailey, PO Box 334, Hot Sulphur Springs, CO 80451.
