Obituary: James Fred Little

James Fred Little passed away at home from heart failure on May 15, 2009.

Fred was born to Watson and Faye Little of Parsons, Kan., on Nov. 3, 1918. While training for the Navy in Chicago, Fred met Joan Helene Wagner. They married in 1943 and celebrated 65 years last September before Joan’s passing in December 2008. Fred served in the Navy during WW II, and returned from the war to attend Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. He earned a degree in Ornamental Horticulture, eventually owning Williams and Harvey Village Nursery in Prairie Village, Kans. He continued this well known, successful business until June 1970, when he and Joan moved to Grand Lake.

Fred enjoyed odd jobs in Grand Lake during his years there; he drove the school bus and Grand Lake’s ambulance, refinished wooden Chris Craft boats, and mowed the golf greens. The Littles moved to Loveland in 1982.

Fred was an active member of the community until this past year. Immediately upon moving to the area, Fred and Joan were active in Faith Church, working at the Community Kitchen, delivering Meals on Wheels, and serving Loveland at the Visitors’ Center. Fred enjoyed exercising at Orchard’s Pool regularly until the past few months. He was a voracious reader and loved sharing books with his friends. His quick, witty words delighted many.

Fred is survived by two children, Susie Peterson and husband Larry of Granby; Terry Little and wife Cathy of Fort Collins; four grandchildren, Lisa Dickinson and husband Mike of Erie, Josh Peterson and wife Kate of Grand Lake, Jason Little and wife Caroline,OR and Gretchen Parker and husband Kyle, OR and eight great-grandchildren. Fred was a delightful friend to many and will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Church, 2707 Wilson Ave., Loveland 80538. A Memorial Service to celebrate Fred’s life will be held Friday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m, Faith Church.
