Obituary: Oliver "Ollie" Mayfield
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ollie on Jan. 4, 2013. He joins his beloved wife Opal. Ollie leaves behind his greatest fan club, his sister, Charlotte (Jim); his sons, Todd (Allison) and Scott (Patty); his grandchildren, Elliot, Hannah, Natalie (Bob), Daniel, Cole and his great-granddaughter, Lilly. Ollie was born on a farm outside Louisville, Neb. on Feb. 23, 1929, the youngest of five children born to John Raymond and Ollie Mayfield. He graduated from Peru State Teacher’s College and soon after married his sweetheart, Opal. Ollie began his illustrious football career in Alvo and Ralston, Neb. He and his young family moved to Tucson in the early 1950s. His coaching career spanned from Tucson to Grand Lake where he coached the Middle Park Panthers and back to Tucson again. Ollie and Opal spent more than 35 summers and several winters in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Grand Lake. He was a Forest Ranger, avid golfer and a member of the Trinity church of the Pines.
We are forever grateful for Ollie’s friends, coaches, referees, fans, students and athletes who helped to make his life so special and complete. A celebration of Ollie’s life was held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at El Camino Baptist Church in Tucson, Ariz.
