Obituary: William A. Needham
William (Bill) A. Needham, Jr., longtime Grand County resident, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in Sun City West, Ariz.
Bill is survived by Fran, his wife of 40 years, his daughter Carrie Needham, and his son Bill Needham. He is also survived by three grandchildren “Jake, 6, CC, 20 months, and Cooper, 20 months.
Bill was born in Ft. Smith, Ark. on May 16, 1937. After graduating from Oklahoma University, he worked for Phillips Petroleum in Texas, Arizona and Colorado before going to the home office in Bartlesville, Okla. During his time in Grand County, he lived at the Never Summer Ranch before it was sold to the Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. It was there he learned to love snowmobiling. He owned and operated the Villager Department Store in Granby and Alpine West Office Supplies.
Bill served his community as County Commissioner from 1980 to 1988 and served on the Colorado River District for 12 years helping to preserve water rights for the Western Slope as well as various other community services.
Donations may be sent to the Rocky Mountain Nature Association, Attn: Donations, P.O. Box 3100, Estes Park, CO 80517. Donations in his name will benefit the Holzwarth Homestead, a place dear to his heart. Services will be held in Grand Lake sometime in July.
