We seem to be having that most beautiful Indian summer we have been waiting for. Hiking in Grand County is the best in the fall. The undergrowth is thinner, the trees are golden, the risk of lightning is reduced, and the air temperature is perfect for a brisk hike. Most of us have been too busy all summer to even get in a short hike … now is the time. Here is a list of 10 essentials you should never go hiking without. Most will fit in a lightweight backpack or fanny pack.1. Map of the area you are hiking.2. Compass – to help you figure out where you are on the map.3. Flashlight and extra batteries – in case you don’t make it back before dark.4. Emergency clothing – light jacket, hat, gloves, rain slicker, extra socks.5. Food & water – energy bars or candy bars.6. Basic first aid kit – bandages, gauze, etc.7. Sunglasses – sunburned corneas take a long time to heal.8. Pocket knife.9. Matches and some fire starter (like dryer lint) in a dry zip-lock bag.A whistle – less tiring than shouting – in case you need rescuing. Now’s the time to plan a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, where the elk are rutting.
