‘Tis the season to eat right, Grand County

KREMMLING ” It just wouldn’t be the holiday season without the traditional foods. Mmm ” turkey, honey ham, sweet potatoes with crusted marshmallow topping, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy ” pure culinary heaven.
Sugary cookies, pies and cakes seemingly within arms reach at all times disarm us and we too frequently surrender to their call of consumption. So how can we possibly avoid the extra pounds so typically put on during the holidays and still enjoy ourselves?
I asked Cathleen Molloy, registered dietitian and owner of Healthy Eating, Healthy Bodies, for holiday eating advice to share with my readers so we aren’t left feeling guilty on Jan. 2 with desperate weight loss resolutions.
“For starters, continue to exercise,” she said. The holidays coincide with cold weather, which means people tend to not work out as much. Keeping active by taking up a winter sport such as skiing or snowshoeing will help to maintain a proper metabolism.
If getting out in the cold weather just isn’t your thing, then make an investment in home exercise equipment and actually use it.
“Be mindful of what you are eating,” was her second bit of advice.
Taking the time to savor every bite will make you more cognizant of the flavors and you’ll enjoy it more. Slowing down will also make the experience more enjoyable and you’ll feel like you’re keeping pace with others at the table while consuming less.
Drinking water in between bites will also extend the time it takes to eat and still allow you to enjoy company at the dinner table.
Also, try using a smaller plate. Yes it is a psychological trick you can pull on yourself that will work in your favor by keeping the portion size down.
Another portion control method is to pre-cut the main dishes and deserts so guests aren’t tempted to over-serve themselves. Smaller serving spoons will also have a lower portion effect.
Don’t starve yourself before a big meal. This will cause you to feel famished and then you’ll dive in and overeat when given the opportunity. One more tip: Increase fiber by eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Fiber is positively linked to proper weight management, lower risk of heart disease and more.
Practice these holiday eating tips and you’ll not only enjoy yourself, but you’ll also respect yourself.
