Five years ago, SolVista Golf and Ski Ranch was proposing to annex about 5,000 acres to the town of Granby. The proposed annexation would include 4,200 units and 1.3-million square feet of commercial space, more than doubling the size of the town and its potential for future growth. In other Granby news, town trustees annexed a 38.02-acre parcel south of town owned by the Colorado Land Board within the boundaries of Grand Elk Ranch and Club. The land was being eyed for residential and commercial development. U.S. Navy Officer Cmdr. Craig Kauber, whose family was from Granby, took command of a squadron of attack jets aboard on aircraft carrier stationed in the Persian Gulf. The change-of-command ceremony took place on the flight desk of the USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed off the nation of Bahrain on the Arabian Peninsula. The Railroad Guy Mark Murphy celebrated his 50th birthday. Local horseback riders were trying to form an endurance racing group. And, in Letters to Santa, local kids asked for Game Cubes, PS2s, puppies, Barbie accessories, Bouncy Balls, skateboards, snowmobiles, Hot Wheels, guitars and Yo-gi-oh cards.Ten years ago, the Hot Sulphur Springs Town Board was given a copy of a proposed water and sewer ordinance for review. According to the clerk and treasurer, more than 20 ordinances had been developed over the years pertaining to how the town regulated providing water and sewer services. The new ordinance combined all the older ones and increased the tap fee to $1,500 for a standard-size water line. Public input was being sought by the U.S. Forest Service regarding a proposed 2.3-million-board-foot timber harvest called the Music Mountain Timber Sale. The sale area included portions of the Kinney Creek and Cabin Creek watersheds west of Granby. Letters to Santa from local kids listed several consistent items, including mountain bikes, Nintendo 64 games systems, four wheelers, Giga Pets, Micro Minis, LEGO sets, snowboards, Beanie Babies, clothes, kittens, remote-control cars, and various cars kids could drive. Charles Weydert was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Richard and Christine Doucette became the grandparents of twins. Middle Park High Schools Nordic skiers opened their season with a surprise victory in races near Leadville. And, fortunately the ice on Lake Granby was strong enough to hold Dean Odens 1990 Jeep Cherokee which had veered off U.S. Highway 34 and onto the lake.Twenty-five years ago, the board of directors of the East Grand Fire Protection District No. 4 cut nearly 10 mills off the 1983 levy in a special meeting, reducing if from more than 23 mills to 13.412 mills. Revenues from that fund were to pay for two new fire stations, two new trucks and other equipment. The Bureau of Land Management issued an easement to Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association for the Hayden-Blue River 345 KV power line. Tri-State reportedly needed to come up with a center line survey, along the approved corridors, before applying to the county for a permit to put in the line. A buried electric cable exploded on Country Road 72, causing a small ground fire and cutting off electric service to the Fraser Valley area for several hours. The fire department put out the fire and Mountain Parks Electric responded to repair the cable. Fraser residents not only had electrical service outages, but they also lost cable television service for a while. Heritage Cablevisions office was closed for the holidays, with a tape machine taking service calls. The office had been without a local manager when Ben Meredith, manager for the previous decade, left the company for medical reasons. Maxine Mater and Edward Stieber were married. Ben Meredith was the new owner of Bens Aspen Leaf Cafe. The El Grande Theatre was showing The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. And, Columnist Rebecca Morris asked Santa Claus for a place to get Chinese food in Granby, while columnist Patrick Browers No. 1 wish on behalf of the town was for a traffic light for Agate Avenue and First Street.Fifty years ago, an inmate of the county jail set fire to several mattresses, destroying them and filling the jail with smoke. No other damage was reported, and the fire was quickly put out by Undersheriff Bob Blayney. The Baker Mt. Ski Club sponsored an evening of fun for the public. The evening would begin with an old-fashioned box social. A one-act play would follow the social, as well as a film depicting the skiing facilities at Winter Park, a ski apparel fashion show, and a performance by the Kremmling mens quartet. The Colorado Game and Fish commission gave preliminary approval to a proposal of the State Land board that the CG&F department take over management of the 72,000-acre Colorado state forest in and around Jackson County. The land board suggested the transfer because it did not have proper funds and facilities to develop the property like the CG&F department could. In other CG&F news, a half million 1958 fishing licenses had been received by the department in time for sale as Christmas presents. The licenses were the new multiple type with the type desired to be punched by agents. Katherine Zachary and Doyle Likely, Jr. were engaged. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gilbert and sons and Vic Huffaker attended the Blue Valley Sportsmans turkey shoot. And, more than 200 local-area school kids got free polio shots.
