Zen and the art of pre-winter maintenance in Kremmling
December 2, 2008
At some point during our life in the Rockies, each of us earns the right to tell our own little wisdom story or zen anecdote, that brief moment when the light bulb clicks on and we get it, even if just for that moment. So here goes.
While reading my 25th anniversary hardcover edition of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, I set it down to go outside and pickup the dog poo strewn over the six acres we live on. I know it’s a short story and without getting too deep into the subject matter, picking it up over six acres does have a contemplative quality to it. Besides, I had already read the book a couple of times and the dogs were starting to take baggies outside with them.
My point being, some things don’t take care of themselves and this includes everything on my “get ready for winter” list. Cleaning up after the dogs was but one item on my master list of things to pick up and store, clean up, or otherwise organize before the snows came. This was going to be the year I learned my lesson and got it done early so I didn’t have to dig it out with a shovel if I could still find it.
However, the recent nice weather made it obvious to everyone that there would be no winter this year, so everything except the dog poo was put off until a later date. Fortunately, my wife had decided to do a few crucial things like undo the hoses even though I had told her not to worry about it ” it was on my list.
I can only hope the recent snow melts and gives me a second chance. If not, there are other things going on to occupy myself with.
As I mentioned last week, Santa Paws is making an appearance on behalf of Grand County Pet Pals to have his picture taken with your pet and family. On Saturday, Dec. 6, Santa Paws will be at Mountain Dawg Outfitters in Fraser from noon until 4 p.m. On Sunday, he will be at the Grand County Animal Shelter from noon until 4 p.m.
While you’re there, maybe you can find a new friend for your pet this holiday season.
After having your picture taken, the Kremmling Preschool will be having its Christmas Craft Fair at West Grand High School. It is their largest fundraiser of the year with the proceeds going to provide educational and operational funding for the Preschool. Along with the craft vendors there will be a bake sale, concession stand, photos with Santa and a Silent Auction. The fair will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
I also wanted to mention a Kremmling treasure we have found. When my parents were out for a few weeks this fall they stayed at the Base Camp Cabins on the edge of town by the cliffs and were thrilled with their stay there. My wife’s parents are staying there for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
If you have company coming and want to give them a unique Kremmling experience, try these cabins. You can contact Kim at 724-9559 for more information.
