Paint brightens the walls of Granby Elementary library
To the right, aspens blaze in colorful multitude. On the left, dramatic mountain peaks stretch toward the sky. No, this isn’t a scene from a viewpoint at Rocky Mountain National Park; it’s the new scenery of the Granby Elementary School library.
Kerry Davidson, librarian at the elementary school, spearheaded the improvement project along with the Library Committee.
“We tossed around some ideas to remake the library, and this is what we came up with,” Davidson said.
Teachers, friends and family donated their time and resources to put brush to wall and paint the scenery along the library entranceway. All of the paint used was donated by student parents, in enough quantity and color needed for the project. Total working time was about three weeks during the summer.
“We didn’t have to pay for any paint,” said Davidson. “It was pretty amazing.”
The previously plain cinderblock walls now blossom with color. The aspens and mountains then lead to the cozy interior of a log cabin, with a blazing fireplace on one wall and a window full of cheerful felt animals on the other.
“We have an area here that’s familiar,” said Davidson, “then the kids will move on to explore the world through books.”
Further painting is planned on the ample space still available throughout the library. The plan is to represent scenes from all over the world – a jungle, a desert, the Arctic, and so on.
The best part of the project, aside from the students’ enjoyment, was the way it got done, through the work of caring volunteers.
“What I liked best was that it really [got done] because the parents helped us, and the teachers helped and donated their time,” Davidson said. “It was a good community effort.”
