Panther’s baseball beats Tigers, 7-3
The Middle Park Panthers Baseball Team defeated the Bennett Tigers earlier this week behind strong pitching performances from Junior Ben Kuhnel and Sophomore Jacob Smith, 7-3.
The win gives the Panthers their second straight victory, and moves them to 5-5 on the season.
Kuhnel threw 3.1 strong innings for Middle Park, allowing two runs (one earned), with three hits, four walks and six strikeouts. Smith allowed one run, three hits, two walks and struck out two in 3.2 innings.
Kuhnel and Smith have been the Panthers’ best arms all year. Kuhnel has a 3.26 ERA, with an 11.3 K/9 on the season. Smith has been even better, lowering his ERA to a sparkling 1.50 after the Bennett game and striking out more than a batter and inning.
Kuhnel also made his presence felt on the offensive side of the ball, going 2-4 with two RBI. Senior Sam Colley went 1-3 with a double, run and two RBI. Smith went 2-3 with a run. Junior Turner Bjerken went 2-4 with a double and a run. Sophomore Gabe Loberg went 1-3 with a double and a run.
Bjerken is leading the team in hitting with a .429 average, and also paces the squad in hits (15) and runs (12). Kuhnel is slashing a superb .387/.525/.645/1.170 on the year.
Up next for the Panthers is a matchup at Platte Canyon to take on the 7-5 Huskies on April 26. They’ll return home for a game against the 5-8 Sheridan Rams on April 28.
