Panthers wrap up regular ski season while looking towards state championships
Middle Park’s alpine ski racers took to the slopes once again last week for the second to last race event before the state championships will be held later this week near Leadville.
The ski action got underway last Friday at the Loveland Ski Area southwest of Grand County on Interstate 70. It was a bit of a slow day for the Panther ski racers with the boy’s team finishing fifth and the girls team finishing sixth. The Panthers competed against a field of five other schools accounting for a total of 99 individual skiers.
Freshman Mia Rimmer led the Panthers on the snow. Rimmer finished in 17th place on the girl’s side of things after completing her two runs in 1:59.69. A bit behind Rimmer was freshman Mary Mintken who finished the Loveland race in 26th place after posting a combined time of 2:07.86. Rounding out Middle Park’s girl’s squad efforts was freshman Emily Lantermans who finished 35th with a time of 2:19.66.
Over on the boy’s side of things senior Caleb Riccio was Middle Park’s leading racer. Riccio completed his two runs with a time of 1:59.16 and secured a 28th place finish for himself. A bit further back was freshman Cole Wettersten who finished in 31st place with a time of 2:04.68. Just place behind Wettersten, and a little less than two seconds slower, was freshman Jacob Dorn who took 32nd place with a time of 2:06.08.
Freshman Cody Docheff was Middle Park’s next fastest racer. Docheff finished in 41st place with a time of 2:21.56. Also competing for the Panthers Friday was junior Brenden Droll, who often leads the Panther men in ski race events. Droll finished his first race in promising time but did not finish his second race and did not receive a formal race place.
Now that the regular ski season has wrapped up the Panthers are gearing up for the Alpine Skiing State Championships, to be held at Ski Cooper outside of Leadville this Thursday and Friday. The top 30 percent of high school ski racers make up the competitive field at the state championships.
Several Middle Park athletes have previously qualified in either the slalom or giant slalom events with most qualifying Panthers already set to compete in both events. Ella Wiser and Bethanne Droll have both qualified for both the state championships in both the slalom and giant slalom events. Likewise both Brenden Droll and Mason Moorhusen have qualified in both events. Caleb Riccio has also qualified for state in the slalom event.
