Paulk: Repeal the Second Amendment?
To The Editor:
Isn’t it interesting, when listening to all the “debate” about guns in this
country, that no one addresses repealing the Second Amendment?
It’s really quite simple. Guns kill people. People with guns kill people
(and defenseless furry creatures who did nothing to deserve being gunned
down). Our government clearly knows what’s best for my body, my bedroom and
every other aspect of my life; guns are unnecessary and evil in a nation as
advanced and modern as the United States of America. In order to honor the
benevolence of our elected leaders, and show that we citizens are above the
need for self defense, it’s time to surrender the outdated and quaint notion
of the Right to Bear Arms.
In fact, over the last 13 years, both Republicans and Democrats have
demonstrated just how modern and advanced they are by giving us laws and
organizations designed to make us all safer. Look at the Patriot Act,
enacted by a Republican president and complicit Congress and later renewed
by a Democratic president. It gave us indefinite detention without charge or
trial, Guantanamo Bay, torture, global drone attacks, warrantless searches,
secret courts and Janet Napolitano. Look at the TSA, an organization with a
far higher concentration of criminals than other similarly sized
organizations in the private sector. They routinely grope men women and
children in their tireless efforts to make us safer while Somali tribesmen
from warring factions are literally outside cleaning out the airplanes
between flights. Don’t you feel safer?
Who needs a gun with 10 bullets? Who needs a gun with one bullet? Nobody,
that’s who! Imagine the thousands of lives saved if we could just recognize
the antiquity of the Second Amendment? The Framers of the Constitution
themselves were slave-owning, Bible-thumping domestic terrorists. Who are
they to speak to us about men being created equal or the importance of
inalienable rights? It’s time to throw those outdated and ridiculous notions
out of the Constitution for good. Luckily, they were stupid enough to
provide a mechanism for doing just that.
Article V of the Constitution states thusly:
“The Congress, whenever two-thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary,
shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the
Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention
for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all
Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the
Legislatures of three fourths of the several States or by Conventions in
three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be
proposed by the Congress…”
Why in the heck are Biden, Obama, Feinstein, Schumer and the others out
campaigning to have citizens lobby Congress to enact unconstitutional
restrictions on a clearly written amendment when all they have to do is get
two-thirds of both houses of Congress to propose eliminating the Second
Amendment; followed by ratification with 38 state legislatures in agreement?
Surely, they know this option exists. The Constitution isn’t that hard to
And for those who think the Constitution grants rights to citizens, you’re
wrong. The Second Amendment doesn’t confer rights upon you; God (the act of
your birth) does. The Second Amendment secures your right to bear arms, by
informing the government of its inability to infringe upon that birthright.
From the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that
among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. ‹ That to secure
these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just
powers from the consent of the governed, ‹ That whenever any Form of
Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People
to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its
foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to
them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
For those of you in our community who seek to deprive citizens of the basic
right to defend their Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness through
legislative fiat, you are misinformed at best and malicious at worst. Every
time you think of a new law limiting the right to bear arms, just think
about the near impossibility of repealing the Second Amendment as it stands
today. “Shall not be infringed” is not a suggestion. There is a legal means
to destroy Second Amendment protections, but until our nation and its
respective states want to have that conversation with an open, public
debate, stay the hell away from our guns!
