Pitkin authorities investigate booby trap on bicycle trail

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – A mysterious twine strung across a trail as if to injure a speeding bicyclist has the attention of criminal investigators in Pitkin County.

The sheriff’s office says criminal charges are likely if they can find the person who strung a piece of twine between trees across the Rio Grande Trail on Sunday. The hazard was spotted by two cyclists from Snowmass Village before anyone was hurt.

Investigators say it appears the twine was tightly strung up at a height meant to clothesline a bicyclist. Deputy Hugh Zuker says authorities would consider the booby trap a case of attempted assault.
