WINTER PARK — With surprising topping combinations like jalapeño, cream cheese, pepperoni and pineapple, Winter Park’s Pizza Pedal’r is known for doing things differently. That exceptionalism has earned them the honor of best pizzeria in Colorado.

TripAdvisor recently named the best pizzeria in every state and Pizza Pedal’r was honored as the top Colorado pizzeria. Rick Marion, owner of Pizza Pedal’r, located in the Winter Park Resort village, said the title came as a surprise but he is honored.

“It’s incredible, I mean we didn’t believe it at first,” Marion said. “There’s a lot of great pizza places, but it’s a great honor to be identified as that.”

TripAdvisor based its ratings on the ratio and quality of diners’ reviews in the past year. In order to be considered a top pizzeria in each state, the restaurants were required to have at least 100 reviews and at least a four out of five rating, with less than 10 locations as of September of this year.

Pizza Pedal’r has a 4.5 out of five rating with almost 300 reviews and only has two locations, one in Denver and one in Winter Park. Its food, value, service and atmosphere rankings are all 4.5 out of five.

Marion said he believed it was the combination of good food, good service and a unique atmosphere that contributed to the positive reviews.

“We have just a really fun, cool vibe of the restaurant, great employees that make it an enjoyable place, so not just the pizza is great, but the whole experience is what’s fun,” he said.

Many of the reviews for Pizza Pedal’r on TripAdvisor praised the service and quality of the pizzas, including the fact that there aren’t any pizzas sitting out and waiting for customers.

In fact, all of the restaurant’s pizzas are made from scratch and fresh to order. Customers can also customize whole pizzas or by the slice.

“Everything that we do is from scratch from the beginning to the end of the pizza essentially, including slices,” he said.

Marion said the customizable slices are a big draw for the restaurant, especially being at the resort, but he also said the Hardtail pizza is one of the most popular menu items and his personal favorite.

“It’s great because (the cream cheese) kind of cuts the heat from the jalapeños and it’s just dollops of cream cheese so it’s not overbearing, it’s just enough to cool it down so it’s a neat combination,” he explained.

The restaurant decorations and pizzas are biking themed, which adds to personality to the interior and menu. Marion said he tries to consider the whole experience of dining at Pizza Pedal’r.

“I think restaurants nowadays have to have something more than just food, it’s kind of the feel of the place so I think that always helps us as well and gives us great ratings on TripAdvisor,” he said.

He encouraged everyone from locals to resort guests to give Pizza Pedal’r a try, noting that the resort has free garage parking after 3 p.m.
