Police seek information about incident involving skier’s death

The Snowmass Village Police Department is asking anyone with knowledge of a skier incident at Snowmass on Tuesday to contact officers.

Thomas Berglund, 77, of Kalamazoo, Mich., died after he struggled to get out of deep snow on the side of the lower Green Cabin trail at Snowmass, according to authorities. He told a passerby who stopped to help him that he had been forced off the slope by a “kid.” It is unknown if that kid was skiing or riding.

Berglund suffered cardiac arrest while the passerby and ski patrol were trying to help him out of the deep powder. He went off the skier’s right of lower Green Cabin and ended up in a short, steep section of terrain between the trail and a slopeside residence.

He was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

No witnesses have contacted the Aspen Skiing Co. with any information about the incident, according to Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle. Pitkin County Coroner Steve Ayers said he initially wasn’t going to perform an autopsy on Berglund because it appeared to be a clear cut case of death by natural causes. However, once he heard that the man was possibly forced off the trail he decided to perform an autopsy and he notified the Snowmass Village Police Department about the incident.

Snowmass Village Police Chief Art Smythe said anyone with information about the incident can call the department at 923-5330 or they can call the Snowmass Ski Patrol at 925-1220.
