Printing photo of criminal was right thing to do
To the Editor:
I am compelled to comment on the recent comments addressed to the editor concerning the photo of Susan Stock being led to court recently.
The newspaper did the right thing.
Part of the function of the press is to make public and hold responsible people’s actions.
Ms. Stock chose to engage in illegal and immoral activities at the expense of all the people. Why shouldn’t she be held publicly accountable?
Is it OK that other teachers have been sullied by her actions?
Is it OK that the hard-earned reputation of the schools has been diminished?
Is it OK to steal and lie to the students, parents, administrators and other teachers who put their trust in her?
Is it OK that she stole from every taxpayer in the district? In the state?
What is the cost to students who have lost faith in any teacher?
I can only imagine the sorrow and disappointment felt by these professionals when this happened. These people should pay a price but not her?
As for help not being available to Ms. Stock, that is simply not true. I know for a fact that parents, teachers, administrators, students and ex-students not only offered help, but went above and beyond to help her. Time after time people said to her that we believe in her.
Ms. Stock actively chose to ignore the help. This is Grand County ” all you have to do is ask for help and you shall receive. That’s who we are.
It is also an important function of the press to let people know the consequences of their actions. It is important that the kids/public see this to understand that if you steal, cheat and lie, you should pay the price.
Part of that price is shame and humiliation. But you make your choices. This process helps people guide their actions because, after all, who wants to be on the front page wearing and orange jumpsuit?
To ignore these items in the press is to stick your head in the sand and pretend they don’t exist. These problems exist in every town, every county. The difference is how they are addressed and solved. Part of that process is discussion.
While it is way cool to see some local kid rockin’ it on the front page, it’s equally important to see the other side of life as well. We have to take the good with the bad.
