Ralph Green: "Right Wing" overstates union violence
To the Editor:
Thank you Mr. Schowalter for your in depth recap of “Union Violence” and your documentation of such. You seem to have changed direction though from your post of June 27.
“Demonstrations continued into Thursday, with preliminary reports first alleging that six port guards were being held hostage throughout the day, but the local police chief since dispelled those rumors, saying that while half a dozen guards were trapped while surrounded by protesters, they were never threatened, but rather ‘feared for their lives because of the size of the crowd and the hostility of the crowd.'”
“This was an organized, large-scale criminal event, “Nelson said. “We’re talking about sabotage. We’re talking about riotous behavior.”
In reality, we’re talking about a “Right Wing” interpretation based on the “National Right to work Committee and Fox News that was, at most, nothing more than some broken windows and much “bluster.” There was no addition media coverage of this event that I could find.
“NYC Marriott” did have a union walkout but I am finding nothing related to violence being involved. As to “the hotel fire that killed 100 people in Puerto Rico,” it was a fire set by three union employees of the hotel but was not a union issue per-se.
As to the incident in the Wisconsin Capitol involving voter revolt of the Governors and Legislators edicts – that event was peaceful in nature and was not JUST a Union issue, but issues based on civil rights too.
As to the “millions of dollars” of damage done to the building by the protesters – that didn’t happen either. At least not to the tune of millions of dollars.
Repairs of damage to Wisconsin Capitol and grounds caused by protesters in union debate to cost about $270,000 including cleanup.(www.postcrescent.com/)
Now back to the June 27 opinion.
HR 4074 has not even come out of committee and is unlikely to come up for a vote in the House this year. In fact it only has a 2 percent chance for that to happen.
“Voting for Democrats is voting for the dark side of forced unionism” and your issue (rant) with “violence” and “union thugs” is certainly lacking understanding, very partisan and not very “American.” But then, it is an election year.
I am not a union member but I do take your “union thug” comments as an insult.
