Randy Baumgardner: State panel aims to put Grand County in Front Range legislative district

state Rep. Randy Baumgardner
Hot Sulphur Springs, CO Colorado

With reapportionment under way and maps that have been submitted and preliminarily accepted, I have had many phone call with concerns about Grand and Jackson counties being removed from House District 57.

This would put Grand and Jackson counties in districts on the Front Range. These counties near Denver don’t understand our way of life and the difference between the West Slope and the Front Range. I and other members of our communities feel we need to stop this from happening.

I have been asked if there is something anyone can do to help: I will tell you I cannot stop this.

The reapportionment committee is made up of 11 members, five Democrats, five Republicans and one unaffiliated. Every Monday this reapportionment committee receives public testimony about whether people like the map or not.

The maps are supposed to keep together geographical areas, counties and regions of COMMON INTEREST. Questions about our future representation have come up. My suggestion to all residents of Grand and Jackson counties is to get involved and write or email the addresses or call the phone number.

I am told that every email, written letter and phone call will be read or heard by the commission. We cannot have Denver interests control Grand and Jackson counties. Please get involved and let your voices be heard.
