Regarding the garbage needs of second home owners

There are lots of complaints from Grand County residents about second home owners not paying for trash and using Dumpsters that belong to other people.

Notably, there have been no suggestions now alternatives offered for solving this problem that we are aware of.

We have owned a second home in Grand County for 27 years. Our last real estate tax bill was $3,690. Our family uses the Grand County house about 75 days each year.

No one in the family has ever attended a Grand County school, and for onl 75 days a year, we are not big users of Grand County services, including water and sewer.

We don’t subscribe to a garbage service because our cans would be mostly empty and blowing around the neighborhood. Carrying our garbage to DIA is not a practical answer, nor is carrying it to metro Denver a practical answer because of the odor and mess in the vehicles.

In our opinion, we need a legally paid for and convenient Dumpster to use while we are in Grand County. We wouldn’t expect a garbage credit from our Grand County real estate taxes, but such a credit would be fair. The alternatives could be an extra charge from the county, city or our neighborhood, which would give us access to Dumpsters.

Or, maybe one or more of the garbage companies could open drop off stations with pre-paid or drop off fee service.

We think most, if not all, second homeowners, would be willing to pay the fee. We need Grand County to provide us with an answer and opportunity to be law abiding.

Or, is this all garbage?
