Rep proposes task force for immigrant sheepherders

DENVER (AP) – A Colorado lawmaker has introduced legislation to form a task force to study ways to help immigrant sheepherders who work long hours for little money on the desolate western Plains.

Rep. Daniel Kagan, a Denver Democrat, says foreign workers are sometimes subjected to 90-hour workweeks for anywhere from $600 to $750 a month on ranches in the West, including Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and California.

Kagan says he wanted to pass a law increasing their wages, but he didn’t have the votes.
