Rescue a pet instead of buying one

To the Editor:

I want to congratulate Ellen Stone and Gus the German shepherd Rescue Dog of the Year.

It’s happy endings like this that point out the benefits of adopting pets through shelters and rescue groups rather than buying them from pet stores and backyard breeders.

Euthanasia is a fact of life, and the many groups and volunteers who work diligently to place unwanted dogs and cats in loving homes fight an uphill battle against sheer numbers. You can go online and read any number of horrific stories about the puppy mills which provide those cute little puppies to the pet stores, many of whom have illnesses and disabilities from inbreeding and unhealthy conditions.

Rescue groups and shelters end up trying to save the sad results of many of those impulse purchases from the mall.

If you want a particular breed, check them out online ” almost all have a rescue group connected. If not, check your local shelter. They will work with you to make a good, and permanent, placement.

No pet will ever love you more than one you rescue.
