Colorado Department of Local Affairs awards grant to Plank by Plank project

The Colorado Department of Local Affairs has awarded Kremmling’s Wellness Center restoration project a nearly $1.2 million grant. “This funding, coupled with the $500,000 already raised by the Middle Park Medical Foundation, marks a significant milestone in enhancing community health resources,” stated Middle Park Health.

The Middle Park Medical Foundation has received a $1.15 million Community Resiliency Challenge grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, which it will use for its Plank by Plank project, a yearslong campaign to restore Kremmling’s Wellness Center gym.

“The support from (the department), combined with the generosity of our community, brings us one step closer to realizing our vision for a modern and resilient Wellness Center,” Andrew Radzavich, the foundation’s executive director, stated in a news release. “This project will enhance our ability to serve the community while promoting sustainability and energy independence.”

Total funds raised for Plank by Plank are $1.65 million, including donations from community members. Now that the campaign has met its fundraising goal, construction can commence in early 2025. Preliminary construction cost estimates are currently $1.3 million.

At the Country BASH on Oct. 4, the town of Kremmling donated $10,000 to the Middle Park Medical Foundation for the Wellness Center gym project. The Plank by Plank project is fully funded after receiving a state grant.

How the Wellness Center received a state grant

The project became eligible for the Climate Resiliency Challenge grant in November through an energy efficiency designation. The designation allowed the foundation to secure matching funds from the Department of Local Affairs, “reflecting a commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable practices within the project,” the news release stated.

“The renovation plan includes a comprehensive remodel of the gym, alongside the installation of solar panels on the roof and the creation of a microgrid,” according to the release.

The upgrades will enable the Wellness Center to significantly reduce its energy costs through the use of solar power, leading not only to long-term savings but also an environmentally friendly facility, according to the foundation.

Through the new solar power system, the Wellness Center will generate and store its own energy, ensuring that the facility can remain operational during power failures.

“This emergency capability positions the Wellness Center as a vital community resource, ready to act as a shelter during times of emergency,” the release stated.
