Ritter to discuss higher education plan

DENVER (AP) – Gov. Bill Ritter will address recommendations for preserving higher education in the face of declining revenues and increasing tuition.

The plan will be submitted Thursday by the Higher Education Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

The planning committee is warning that Colorado voters and taxpayers need to come up with more money for higher education or the system is going to collapse.

Committee co-chairman Jim Lyons says options include raising taxes, providing more state funding, charging higher fees for graduate programs and consolidation of programs.

Lyons says the minimum to avoid losing ground is continued state funding of $760 million.
