Rock slide closes Berthoud Pass

WINTER PARK, 9:45 A.M. – Berthoud Pass has been closed since 6 a.m. from a rock slide on the west side and may be closed until noon to 1 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Major snowmelt brought down rock debris 7 miles east of Winter Park at the first major switchback.

A boulder weighing 16 tons and the size of a small pickup truck (sized about 8 feet by 10 feet) came to rest on the roadway, blocking the westbound lane, said Bob Wilson of CDOT.

“We need to bring in equipment to break it up,” he said.

Opening Berthoud Pass may be on a limited basis, with the three-lane roadway reduced to two lanes to allow workers to continue debris cleanup.

Since traffic was light during the morning hour, no vehicles or injuries took place during the rockslide.
