Anyone who visits Rocky Mountain National Park during winter gets to enjoy scenic beauty while skipping the summer crowds. Even during winter, the park is alive with activity, including chances to explore the west side of the park with the guidance of a ranger.
Weather and snow conditions permitting, ranger-led winter programs are scheduled to begin in January and continue through late March. The programs will take place at various locations inside the park near Grand Lake.
Snowshoe tours
The 2-hour guided snowshoe tours will take place at 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays beginning Saturday, Jan. 4. During the tours, park rangers will share their knowledge about plants and wildlife in the area.
The walks are moderately strenuous, covering hilly, uneven, snow-covered meadows and mixed conifer forests within the park. No previous snowshoeing experience is required, but participants should have a fitness level that allows them to comfortably snowshoe about 1 mile over hilly terrain at high elevation.
Snowshoes will be provided, with a range of adult and child sizes available. Participants are also welcome to bring their own snowshoes.
New this year, the park will also offer a 2-hour family-friendly snowshoe walk designed for families with children ages 5 and older. The family tours will begin at 1 p.m. on Fridays in February.
Cross-country ski tours
Beginning Jan. 18, ranger-led cross-country ski tours will be held Saturdays starting at 10 a.m. The tours are scheduled to continue through March 15.
Some cross-country skiing experience is required, and the program is available only to participants ages 16 and older. Skis will not be provided.
- Cost: The tours are free, but park entrance fees are required.
- RSVP: With a limit of 12 people per program, spots are expected to fill up quickly. Reservations can be made up to seven days in advance by calling 970-586-1513.
- What to wear: A waterproof winter jacket, snow pants, warm socks, waterproof boots, gloves, a hat, and sunglasses or goggles are recommended.
