Sawdust ignites at Confluence Energy pellet plant

Sky-Hi News Staff Report
Grand County, Colorado CO

A pile of sawdust at the Confluence Energy pellet plant spontaneously caught fire on Saturday, July 21, causing the Kremmling Fire Protection District to respond.

On Sunday they were assisted by the Hot Sulphur Springs Fire Department as the fire continued.

Though the fire is still burning past the weekend, “It’s not a hazard type issue,” said Tony Tucker, Fire Chief of the Kremmling Fire Protection District.

This type of fire begins deep beneath the surface of the sawdust, often smoldering for a long while before being noticed.

“The only way is to separate the unburned from the burned, spread it out and go on with your business,” Tucker said. “That’s their responsibility, not ours.”
