Search for escaped Colorado inmate continues
STERLING, Colo. (AP) – The search continues for an inmate who escaped from a maximum security prison in northeastern Colorado.
Forty-eight-year-old Douglas J. Alward remained at large Tuesday. He fled from the Sterling Correctional Facility about 100 miles northeast of Denver sometime Sunday night.
Alward was serving a 20- to- 40-year sentence for attempted murder, assault, burglary and kidnapping.
Prison officials aren’t saying how the escape occurred but stressed that he couldn’t have simply walked away because of high security.
Alward would have been eligible for parole in October and had worked his way to a classification considered just below the minimum risk.
