Searchers find body of man in Colorado River

RIFLE, Colo. (AP) – Searchers have found the body of a young man in the Colorado River near Rifle.

The Garfield County sheriff’s office said the body of 18-year-old Javier Martin Morales-Reyes was found at 1 p.m. Friday. The Summit County dive team joined the search for the man, who was swept away while swimming in the river Thursday afternoon.

The Garfield County sheriff’s office says he hit the river’s surface on his side while swinging on the rope, apparently knocking the wind out of him.

Bystanders tried to rescue him but he panicked and was swept away. Law enforcement officers and firefighters lined the riverbank to look for the man but were unable to spot him.
