Second homeowners in Grand County deal with trash by sharing service

To the Editor:

I read with interest the letter of Jim and Janice Campbell and the editorial asking for solutions to the second home owner trash dilemma.

We have owned a second home in Grand County for 43 years. We have contracted for trash pickup the last two years. We are close to several summertime neighbors and they contribute to the pickup cost and use the trash container.

It is a cooperative effort; those who are present on the pickup days make sure the container is set out for pickup and put back afterward in a central location for all to use. So far this arrangement has worked well. The container is more than large enough to hold the trash of 3-4 households, and the trash company has not complained about it.

We used to look for Dumpsters in town but most have locks, which is understandable. There are Dumpsters also at boat launches and other public places. They are also in Rocky Mountain National Park if you go home over Trail Ridge Road, and at rest areas the other side of Berthoud Pass.

I realize this might not be a solution for those who live in isolated areas with no nearby neighbors. I merely point out what we did on our own without having to ask the county to provide a Dumpster for our use.

Happy Thanksgiving and GO BIG RED ” beat CU.
