Sediment from wildfire to be dredged from lake

DENVER (AP) – Crews will dredge thousands of cubic yards of sediment from a Colorado reservoir, the legacy of the 2002 Hayman wildfire that stripped away vegetation and triggered erosion.

Dredging at Strontia (STRAWN’-cha) Springs Reservoir southwest of Denver will take place from March through December 2011.

Area roads and parking lots will be closed during dredging and from August through November of this year as crews set up.

The area is popular with mountain bikers and others.

Denver’s water utility, which operates the reservoir, expects at least 650,000 cubic yards of sediment will be removed.

The utility says that’s enough to fill Invesco Field at Mile High to a depth of 200 feet. It wasn’t immediately clear where the sediment will be taken.
